Biswa Ijtema 2023: A Spiritual Gathering of Thousands in Bangladesh

The serene banks of the Turag River in Tongi, north of Dhaka, Bangladesh, transformed into a haven of spirituality as Biswa Ijtema 2023 commenced. This annual gathering draws tens of thousands of Muslims from across Bangladesh and the globe, eager to join in prayer and reflection over three spiritually enriching days.

The first phase of Biswa Ijtema, a large-scale congregation that ranks among the most significant Islamic assemblies worldwide, began on January 20th and will culminate in a grand prayer session on January 22nd. As has been the tradition since the 1950s, the Tablighi Jamaat movement organizes this event, uniting Muslims in shared devotion and learning.

This year, nearly 2,150 international participants from 72 countries graced the event, joining the multitude of Bangladeshis in a shared quest for spiritual renewal. The assembly featured enlightening sermons from esteemed Islamic scholars, notably from countries like India and Pakistan. These sermons cover the tenants of Islam, fostering a sense of unity and peace among attendees.

For the attendees, Biswa Ijtema is more than a religious congregation. It is an opportunity for spiritual renewal, a chance to seek divine blessings, and a platform for global camaraderie. Mohammed Nadim, a dedicated participant from the northern district of Rangpur, articulated the deep sense of peace and collective yearning for global harmony shared by those present. I come here every year to seek blessings. It gives me peace; together, we pray for calm and unity in our lives and the world, he expressed.

Security remains a priority, with stringent measures ensuring the safety of participants. While there are no specific threats, the vigilant presence of both uniformed and plainclothes officers, supported by security installations, safeguards the congregation. As expressed by A.K.M. Shahidur Rahman, the director-general of the elite Rapid Action Battalion force, comprehensive plans are in place to maintain a secure and nurturing environment for all.

In keeping with tradition, the first phase will be followed by a second and third phase in early February, drawing even more participants to the peaceful banks of Turag. As thousands continue to converge at this global Islamic congregation, Biswa Ijtema not only affirms faith but also reinforces the enduring message of peace, unity, and forgiveness.

Each attendee's journey, be it from a nearby village or from a distant country, adds a new dimension to this spiritual tapestry, nurturing a deep-rooted sense of kinship and shared beliefs. The Biswa Ijtema remains a testament to the enduring human spirit, seeking tranquility and eternal blessings in a world that deeply needs unity and peace.
