Chattanooga Mocs extended their red-hot Southern Conference momentum Saturday, edging East Tennessee State 78-71 behind Honor Huff’s sharpshooting clinic. Huff drilled five three-pointers en route to 19 points, while Trey Bonham and Frank Champion combined for 31 points in the team’s seventh consecutive victory.
ETSU’s Quimari Peterson delivered a career-high 31 points but couldn’t match Chattanooga’s offensive firepower. Chattanooga Mocs (19-8, 11-3) now sit firmly in conference title contention, leveraging crisp perimeter shooting (14-for-32 from deep) to stifle the Buccaneers.
Quimari kept us alive all night. His aggression was unreal, said ETSU coach Brooks Savage postgame.
East Tennessee State (15-12, 8-6) trailed just 42-41 at halftime, but Chattanooga tightened its defense late. The Mocs limited ETSU to 38% second-half shooting despite Peterson’s heroics.
Critical performances fueling the clash:
- Huff: 19 PTS, 5/8 3PM, 4 rebounds
- Bonham: 18 PTS, 6 three-pointers
- Peterson: 31 PTS, 4 AST, 3 STL
With March looming, Chattanooga’s depth looms large. Champion added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, cementing the Mocs’ balanced attack. ETSU’s DJ Hughes neared a double-double (11 PTS, 9 REB), but bench support waned.
The Mocs host Western Carolina Wednesday aiming to extend their streak, while ETSU faces UNC Greensboro in a pivotal conference rematch.
