China’s Vice Minister of Public Security Liu Zhongyi has toured the Thai-Myanmar border amid a multinational effort to dismantle criminal hubs exploiting online scam networks. Over 7,000 workers, including foreign nationals from Africa and China, await repatriation following coordinated raids.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed this escalation targets cross-border crime syndicates operating false romantic schemes, illegal gambling rings, and fake investment platforms. Victims globally have lost billions of dollars, while trafficked workers endure virtual slavery under false employment promises.

China and regional partners are taking comprehensive steps to eradicate telecom fraud and maintain regional security, stated Chinese spokesperson Guo Jiakun.

Key developments driving the crackdown include:

  • Thailand halting utilities to Myanmar border zones linked to scams
  • Thai DSI pursuing human trafficking charges against militia leaders
  • High-profile rescues like Chinese actor Wang Xing’s abduction case

Despite denials from Karen Border Guard Force leader Saw Chit Thu, Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation accuses his group of enabling scam centers through property deals and security arrangements. Over 45,000 suspects were repatriated during a 2023 Shan state operation, signaling Beijing’s zero-tolerance stance.

With 10,000 more potential repatriations underway, analysts warn Thailand’s tourism image suffers as social media amplifies trafficking risks. Chartered flights for 600 Chinese nationals highlight the urgency of stabilizing regional security partnerships.
