Delaware State University has made headlines by appointing former NFL star Clinton Portis as running backs coach and run game coordinator under head coach DeSean Jackson. Portis, a two-time Pro Bowl selection with 9,923 career rushing yards, joins a growing list of ex-NFL players like Michael Vick and Eddie George coaching at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Portis’ decorated career began with the Denver Broncos, where he earned 2002 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after a 1,508-yard season. Traded to Washington in 2004, he recorded four 1,000-yard campaigns before retiring in 2010. His transition to coaching follows a 2022 health care fraud conviction tied to a scheme involving retired NFL players, resulting in six months of federal imprisonment.

The hiring underscores Delaware State’s commitment to leveraging NFL experience. Jackson, entering his second season, aims to revitalize the Hornets’ ground game with Portis’ expertise. Notable HBCU coaching hires now include:

  • DeSean Jackson (Delaware State)
  • Michael Vick (Norfolk State)
  • Eddie George (Tennessee State)
  • Deion Sanders (formerly at Jackson State)

Portis’ appointment sparks debate about redemption and mentorship in athletics. As HBCUs gain traction for blending star power with developmental focus, his journey from Miami Hurricanes national champion to NFL standout—and now collegiate coach—adds a compelling chapter to Delaware State’s football narrative.
