A 61-year-old inmate died at Auburn Correctional Facility over the weekend as New York’s escalating illegal prison guard strike entered its second week. Jonathon Grant, serving a 34-to-40-year sentence for rape and burglary, was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday despite life-saving efforts by staff and National Guard members deployed to replace striking officers.

State officials confirmed Grant’s death is under investigation, but advocates warn systemic failures are mounting.

“Incarcerated individuals statewide report critical lapses in medical care, including withheld insulin and blood pressure medication,”
stated The Legal Aid Society, linking the crisis to the strike.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s deployment of National Guard troops has failed to resolve lockdowns disrupting medical treatments, legal visits, and parole hearings. Over 40 prisons remain understaffed as guards protest without union approval, demanding:

  • Higher wages and increased hiring
  • Tighter visitor screening protocols
  • Reversal of solitary confinement limits under the Halt Act

Retired corrections officer Ed Ventre described deteriorating conditions:

“Staffing is at historic lows. Officers face mandatory 24-hour shifts amid rising violence against both guards and inmates.”
State data reveals assaults on staff doubled from 1,043 in 2019 to 1,938 in 2023, while inmate assaults surged 113%.

Mediation between New York State and the Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association began Monday, but tensions flared at Coxsackie Correctional Facility where over 100 protesters rallied with signs reading “NYS Failed Us.” Meanwhile, six guards face murder charges for the December beating death of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional – a case advocates cite as emblematic of systemic dysfunction.

With prison staffing crises intensifying nationwide, Grant’s death underscores the human cost of labor disputes in correctional systems strained by overcrowding and underfunding.
