Cyprus is deploying a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to safeguard its innovative 3D-printed artificial reefs, a groundbreaking initiative to restore marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean. The EONIOS project, led by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), combines advanced robotics and eco-conscious engineering to combat declining fish populations and habitat loss.

These solar-powered drones operate continuously for up to a month, using HD cameras and sensors to monitor reef development while deterring illegal fishing activities.

Our reefs create thriving ecosystems where barren seabeds once dominated,said CMMI CEO Zakarias Siokouros. The AUVs act as both scientists and guardians, ensuring sustainable recovery.

French manufacturer Arkeocean revealed the drones cost 80% less than traditional submersibles. Six AUVs now deliver the capabilities of a single conventional drone,explained Arkeocean’s Tamara Brizard. Future models will dive to 9,842 feet, expanding applications for offshore energy projects and deep-sea research.

Deployed 66 feet below Limassol’s coast, the porous cement reefs mimic natural structures, attracting algae, crustaceans, and migratory fish species. Early trials at Ayia Napa Marina show 40% increased biodiversity around prototype installations.

With 35% of Mediterranean fish stocks overfished, Cyprus aims to market this technology globally. The AUVs’ stealth design also offers military potential, capable of monitoring restricted waters undetected. As climate change accelerates marine habitat loss, such innovations could redefine ocean conservation strategies worldwide.
